The Hoferhaus
For over 500 years, prominent figures have resided in the Hoferhaus at Chlumeckyplatz No. 2.
The oldest frescoes on a bourgeois house in Central Europe make it historically significant.
But that’s not all: Here you are in the center of the traditional Salzkammergut. You can swim in lakes with drinking water quality, explore the panoramic roads to the local mountain Loser in summer, and enjoy its family-friendly ski area in winter. You’re also close to the enchanting UNESCO World Heritage site of Hallstatt and can experience the cozy lifestyle typical of this unique region.
In 1511, Emperor Maximilian stayed at this late Gothic building with the then salt governor.
Around 1520, the house was adorned with beautiful frescoes depicting Saint Sebastian, Anna Selbdritt (the representation of Saint Anna with her daughter Mary and the baby Jesus), and Saint Florian.
These are the oldest frescoes on a bourgeois house in Central Europe. The first floor features interior frescoes depicting scenes from the Samson story.
The Hoferhaus has been owned by the same family for about 200 years, who not only care for this historically significant monument but also hosted a notable citizen of Bad Aussee, Obermedizinalrat Dr. Konrad Hofer.
Dr. Hofer was a co-founder of the Realgymnasium, an outstanding climber, and, together with his uncle, was responsible for the development of the Ausseer sulfate springs of the spa resort. His wife, Gertrude Hofer, the good soul of the house, was a renowned painter and journalist known far beyond the borders of the Ausseerland, attracting many artists, actors, and intellectuals to the Hoferhaus. It’s hard to find a house in Bad Aussee that doesn’t have one of her watercolors hanging.
