Tips for your holiday in Hallstatt

A Region Steeped in History

Inextricably linked with Hallstatt is the title “UNESCO World Heritage Site.” The Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut region has been awarded this distinction for good reason. A narrow road runs along the lake, giving the place a secluded, special feeling.

However, salt mining is also omnipresent in Hallstatt. Its history has been kept alive for thousands of years and will likely remain important for this community far into the future.

Flora and fauna are rich in diversity, and nature lovers will hardly be able to get enough of the variety of animals and plants.

Excursions in Hallstatt

  • Hallstatt itself doesn’t require additional excursions beyond the town and the beautiful lake. However, since Hallstatt is almost considered a museum town, it’s eager to showcase what else there is to see.
  • The Salt Worlds, the salt mine, are a must-visit. Tales from the past, lovingly worked up and presented, can be found in the dark tunnels of the mountains.
  • The Skywalk World Heritage View takes you high above. A view of Lake Hallstatt from 360 meters above the town center offers a magnificent panoramic view. But beware: the sharp steel construction is not for the faint-hearted.
  • In the Bone House, you will find 1200 painted skulls that have been kept there since the 12th century. Today, this custom has somewhat declined, with the last skull added in 1995.
  • The burial ground is of great global significance. Luxury goods testify to extensive contacts even before Christ.
  • Ice diving in Lake Hallstatt is a unique experience. Even if you thought diving was more of a summer activity, a dive in December will certainly convince you otherwise.

Favorite Local Spots in Hallstatt

  • For all-around service, visit Im Kainz in Hallstatt. Whether for breakfast, lunch, coffee break, or dinner, whether fish, meat, or just a cup of tea. Sit back and let yourself be royally pampered during your well-deserved holiday.
  • The Bräuhaus Hallstatt has a long history. Over 600 years ago, Emperor Maximilian I granted the house brewing rights, and for the past 150 years, it has been owned by the Lobisser-Höplinger family.
  • Like many places in the Salzkammergut, Hallstatt also offers delicious homemade pastries from the Maislinger confectionery. Fresh pastries in the morning, and you can start your eventful day full of energy.

Experience a part of history up close. Enjoy with all your senses and be right in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt. Its facets will enchant you, and despite its manageable size, you won’t feel that you have experienced too little during your holiday.
