Tips for your holiday at Lake Wolfgang

The Caribbean in the Salzkammergut

The picturesque Lake Wolfgang is dominated by the three towns of St. Gilgen, Strobl, and St. Wolfgang.

All three are worth a visit, best explored by taking a steamer of the Wolfgangsee shipping company. Whether in Advent for the beautiful Wolfgangseer Advent, at Easter, or in summer, the ships stop at each of the three towns, allowing you to explore the streets and corners of all three places in a convenient way.

Let’s start in St. Wolfgang

The historic town center invites you to linger, and you will appreciate the beauty of the place even more on closer inspection. Colorful, lovingly restored houses await in the town center, inviting you for a coffee, a piece of cake, or the legendary Salzburger Nockerl. These taste particularly good right by the water at the “Weißen Rössl.” Thanks to Peter Alexander, the hotel became world-famous and is still a must-visit during your stay in St. Wolfgang. You will soon have the familiar sounds of the famous classic “in the Salzkammergut, you can have a good time” in your ears.

But you should also visit the pilgrimage church with the famous winged altar by Michael Pachler. Well-known pilgrimage routes have long attracted travelers from all over the world to St. Wolfgang, and those who wish should not shy away from the path up to the Kalvarienberg church. The view will reward you!

Other Attractions in St. Wolfgang

  • Pilgrimage Church of St. Wolfgang
  • The Schafbergbahn railway up to Schafberg. The 7-lake view will amaze you
  • A boat tour on Lake Wolfgang
  • Visit the Höplinger fishery and taste freshly caught or smoked Wolfgangsee fish
  • In summer: a refreshing round of water skiing at the Stadler Water Ski School on the lakeside promenade
  • A day on a sailboat with a rental boat from the Raudaschl Sailing School

Our Favorite Spots in St. Wolfgang

  • Highly recommended breakfast at the Kaffeewerkstatt
  • Choose between a cake at the Wallner patisserie or the classic "Salzburger Nockerl" at the Weißes Rössl Hotel
  • Steak lovers will love Sandro Gamsjäger's restaurant: d`Speiß
  • And really good pizza can be found at the campsite in Berau
  • The most beautiful picnic spot is at the Aschinger Bauern with a view over Lake Wolfgang and a large playground
  • A quieter but equally beautiful snack spot is the Dorner snack station
  • And for great Austrian food, head to the Leopoldhof in Ried

Continuing towards St. Gilgen

St. Gilgen is the birthplace of Mozart's mother Anna, and thus the Austrian composer and his family history are richly represented in the historic town center of St. Gilgen.

Stopping along the lakeside road allows you to explore the town leisurely, best with an ice cream cone from Fischer. On the way back, you should stop by Café Angusta. A truly delightful place with the best little bundt cakes.

The town is dominated by its local mountain, the Zwölferhorn. The new cable car has been in operation for only a few years, offering year-round access with mountain yoga, good breakfast, exciting hiking trails, and airy heights for paragliders. And if you love views, you should explore the Gschma Platzerl Plombergstein and Margareten Höhe.

Excursions in St. Gilgen

  • Birthplace of Mozart's mother
  • The local mountain Zwölferhorn
  • Gschma Platzerl Plombergstein and Margareten Höhe
  • Falkenstein Church
  • The beautiful hiking trail along the lake at Falkenstein
  • The Ochsenkreuz in Lake Wolfgang

Our Favorite Spots in St. Gilgen

  • Angusta Café in town and the Angusta Steakhouse
  • The Batzenhäusl on the outskirts of St. Gilgen towards Mondsee
  • An ice cream from Fischer by the lake
  • Delicious breakfast and of course the best hiking snacks at the Lärchenhütte on the Zwölferhorn
  • Nilus Portofino, a really good Italian restaurant

Strobl on Lake Wolfgangsee

When the sun sets into the lake on a summer day, Strobl will always captivate you. The small, somewhat sleepy town lies directly on Lake Wolfgang and offers two public lake accesses, the municipal bath and the Wasbad, right by the lake. And if you prefer it quieter and more secluded, just take a few steps into the meadow and find your own spot by the lake. Just don't be surprised if you discover some nudists there.

But not only is summer in Strobl beautiful, winter has much to offer with the Postalm. Above the town lies Europe's second-largest alpine pasture area, offering a winter wonderland for young and old, and without snow, a wonderful hiking experience.

Once you discover Strobl, it will always have a place in your heart.

Excursions in Strobl

  • Lucky spot Bürglstein – whether to let the sun shine on your face in the wooden water lilies or stroll along the lake. The choice is yours.
  • Fun water skiing rounds on the Strobler lakeside promenade. Every Thursday in summer at 8 p.m. is the water ski show
  • A bike tour to Schwarzensee or a hike to Vormauer or Bleckwand
  • Exploring the Postalm
  • Wolfgangsee summer toboggan run
  • Gasthaus Kleefeld with its wildlife enclosure

Our Favorite Spots in Strobl

  • Lake Sushi at Bergrose Hideaway
  • Craving Mexican food? Then head to the Stroblerhof
  • Local classics around the lake can be found at Gasthaus Kirchenwirt
  • Pure romance awaits you on a mild summer evening in the garden of Brandauer Villas
